Every probability in poker comes from one fixed, 52-card fact. Learn the deck cold and the maths later gets easy.

Poker runs on a closed deck: 52 cards, four suits, thirteen ranks — and unlike the pack you'd grab for Rummy or Go Fish, the two jokers get thrown out before a hand ever starts. 'Closed' is the word that matters. Nothing is added or removed mid-hand, so every card you can't see is one of a knowable, shrinking set. That single fact is the whole basis of poker math — outs, equity and pot odds are all just counting the cards still unseen.
Why suits carry no rank
Here's what beginners over-weight: suits have no ranking power of their own. The four of them — spades ♠, hearts ♥, diamonds ♦ and clubs ♣ — are perfectly equal, so a flush in spades ties an identical flush in hearts and the pot is split. Suits earn their keep in just one everyday way, making a flush (five of a single suit), plus the rare job of settling the forced bring-in in Stud and Razz.
The thirteen ranks
Each suit runs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace — lowest to highest. The Ace is the highest card, but it can also play as the lowest to make the '5-high straight' A-2-3-4-5, known as the wheel. That dual role is the only exception to 'Ace is high'.
Why the fixed deck matters
Because there are exactly 52 known cards, you can always count. Nine cards left that complete your flush? That's nine 'outs' out of the unseen deck. Knowing the deck by heart is what turns table maths from guessing into arithmetic.
