The showdown: who wins the pot
At showdown, exposed cards decide who wins the pot: the best five-card hand takes it. Knowing who shows first and exactly what beats what in poker keeps you from giving away chips you earned. Keep the poker hand rankings chart handy while you learn to read boards.
What showdown is
When the final betting round ends and two or more players are still in the hand, the cards go face-up. This is the showdown, and it decides who wins the pot with the best five-card hand.
Who shows first
If there was a bet on the river, the last player to bet or raise (the last aggressor) shows first. If the river was checked around with no bet, the first active player to the left of the button shows first, and play continues clockwise.

Best five cards win
Each player makes their single best five-card hand from their two hole cards plus the five community cards. The suits are equal in value; only the ranking of the hand matters. The highest-ranking hand takes the pot.
Kickers and playing the board
When two players share the same made hand, the highest side card (kicker) breaks the tie. If your best five cards are entirely the five community cards and no hole card improves you, you are playing the board and can only tie, never beat, another live hand.
Awarding and splitting the pot
The dealer pushes the pot to the best hand. If two hands are exactly equal in all five cards, the pot is split evenly — a chopped pot, with any indivisible odd chip handled by a fixed house rule (spelled out in the Kickers, split pots & ties lesson). Mucked hands cannot win, even if they were actually best.
