Expected value (EV) in poker

Expected value (EV) in poker is the average result a decision earns over the long run: the sum of every outcome's probability times its payoff. The player who stacks off with the worse hand and rivers a two-outer looks like a genius tonight; over a year that same line quietly hands you their chips. EV is how you tell those two players apart.

What EV actually means

Expected value (EV) is the average result a decision would earn if you could repeat it thousands of times. You compute it by weighing every possible outcome by its probability: EV = sum of (probability x payoff). Any single hand is noise. EV is the signal.

Pocket aces is a +EV holding: over a huge sample it wins far more than it loses. But it will still lose plenty of individual pots. That gap between long-run EV and short-run results is variance.

A simple worked example

You are on the river with top pair and the best possible kicker — you hold A-K and the board paired the king — against one opponent. There is $80 in the pot and your opponent shoves $20. Sometimes they turned a set or two pair that has you beat, but plenty of the time they are jamming a worse king, a busted draw, or a pure bluff. Weighing that whole range, you read yourself as good about 60% of the time. Should you call the $20?

Top pair, top kicker: you hold A-K and the board paired your king, so worse kings and busted draws are drawing thin. You call $20 to win the $100 that will be in the pot (the $80 already there plus their $20).

Run the numbers

When you win (60%) you gain $100. When you lose (40%) you lose your $20 call. EV = (0.60 x $100) minus (0.40 x $20) = $60 minus $8 = +$52. A call that averages +$52 is a clear, automatic call, even though you will physically lose the pot 40% of the time.

EV thinking applies before the flop too. Raising strong hands like AK from position is +EV; open-limping weak offsuit hands from early position is usually -EV. Pick the higher-EV line every time.

EV over variance

You cannot control which 60/40 lands tonight. You can only control whether you keep taking +EV decisions. Do that relentlessly and the math grinds in your favor; the short-term swings, good and bad, wash out. The reg who gets it in 60% and loses banked the right side of the bet and reloads without a second thought. The one who calls off drawing to two outs and spikes the river just made a deposit into your account for next time.

Before the test — remember
  • EV = sum of (probability x payoff); a positive number means the play makes money long-term.
  • The right play is always the highest-EV option, even when it loses the individual hand.
  • Variance controls the short term; EV controls the long term. Keep taking +EV spots and results follow.
  • Judge the decision, not the result: a losing +EV call was still the right one, and a winning -EV call was still a leak.
