What does it mean to be under the gun (UTG)? You are first to act preflop with everyone still to speak behind you, and that single fact forces the tightest UTG opening range at the table while ruling out limping entirely. The worst seat to get frisky in
Under the gun you open the pot with the maximum number of players still behind you, any of whom can wake up with a monster. You have position on nobody. That combination of blind aggression risk and being out of position postflop is why UTG demands the tightest range at the table.
What actually makes the cut
Think in three buckets. Big pairs (AA down through roughly TT-99). Strong broadways led by AK and AQ, plus suited kings and queens like KQs. And a thin slice of speculative suited hands, which you can rank against the rest on our starting hands chart. Everything marginal gets folded, because a caller or 3-bettor is far more likely when five seats still get to act.

Standard open size is about 2 to 2.5 big blinds (a touch larger in loose live games). Raising builds the pot while your range is strong, takes the betting lead, and denies cheap flops to the field. Because your range is so tight, that raise carries genuine credibility on later streets.
Adjust for table size
Full ring (9-handed) is tighter still than 6-max, since even more players sit behind you. As you move to later positions in future lessons the range widens dramatically, but UTG stays the anchor: the disciplined, narrow baseline every other opening range is measured against.
