Pot odds: how to calculate them fast

Pot odds, explained in plain poker math: every call has a price and every draw has a chance. Learning how to calculate pot odds and equity turns both into one number, so choosing to call or fold stops being a guess. Practice live on the pot odds calculator.

Price versus chance

Pot odds answer one question: is the pot paying me enough to call? You compare the price of the call to the size of the pot you would win, then check that against your chance of actually winning the hand. If your chance beats the price, calling makes money over time even when this particular hand misses.

The one formula

Equity needed = call / (pot + call). Say the pot is $80, your opponent bets $20 (pot now $100), and it costs you $20 to call. Your break-even equity is 20 / (100 + 20) = 20/120 ≈ 16.7%. If your real chance to win is higher than that, you call; if it is lower, you fold.

Two cards to come assumes the money is all-in now. Facing a bet on a single street, use one card — you'll have to pay again to see the river.

Counting your equity

To compare, you need your chance of winning — estimate it with the rule of 4 and 2 (its own lesson shows why it works): multiply outs by 4 with two cards to come, by 2 with one. Draws sit on a scale. A lone 4-out gutshot is only about 16% by the river and 8% for the next card, while the open-ender below reaches roughly 32%.

Open-ended straight draw: any Queen or Seven makes it — eight outs, ~32% by the river.

When implied odds save the call

Sometimes your equity falls just short of the price, yet calling is still right because of implied odds — the extra chips you expect to win on later streets if you hit. A hidden draw against a big stack can be worth chasing. The mirror image is reverse implied odds: the money you lose when you complete a weak second-best hand, which argues for folding instead.

You called getting the right price, the turn brought a spade — nut flush, and the implied bets pay off.
Before the test — remember
  • Equity needed to call = call / (pot + call). Beat that number and calling profits over the long run.
  • Turn bet size into a price fast: a half-pot bet is risking 1 to win 3, so you need about 25% equity — bigger bets demand more, smaller bets less.
  • Estimate your equity fast with the rule of 4 and 2: outs x4 with two cards to come, outs x2 with one card left.
  • When raw pot odds fall short, implied odds (future bets you can win) can still justify the call — but only if the extra money is realistically there.
