The rule of 2 and 4: fast poker odds math

The rule of 2 and 4 is the quickest poker odds math there is: count your outs, multiply, and you have your equity in a second. On the flop use 4 for both cards to come; for a single street use 2 — the same shortcut behind any poker equity calculator.

One rule, two numbers

Once you know your outs, equity is just multiplication. On the flop, with both the turn and river still to come, multiply your outs by 4. If only one card is coming (flop to turn, or turn to river), multiply by 2. That is the whole rule.

Flush draw: you hold A-K of hearts, the flop brings two more hearts. Nine hearts remain, so 9 outs. 9 x 4 = about 36% by the river; 9 x 2 = about 18% for the next card alone.

Why it works

Each unseen out is worth roughly 2% per card. One street ~ outs x 2. Two streets ~ outs x 4. The real flush-draw number is 34.97% on the flop, so x4 (36%) is close enough to bet the farm on — no calculator required.

Open-ended straight draw: 9-8 sees 7-6 on the flop. Any 5 or 10 makes the straight = 8 outs. 8 x 4 = 32% by the river; 8 x 2 = 16% for one street.

Pick the right multiplier

The x4 shortcut assumes you will see BOTH remaining cards — true when you are all-in on the flop. If you call a flop bet and expect to face another bet on the turn, you are really only buying one card right now: use x2. Using x4 when you will only see one card badly overstates your chances.

Combo monster: 9-8 of hearts on 7h-6c-2h. Nine hearts (flush) plus eight straight cards, minus the two hearts counted twice = 15 outs. Raw x4 says 60%, but true equity is about 54%.
